Tom Garfield has the (dubious?) honour of being our first voicenote tipster. In Episode 01 Fools Gold we spoke about pricing your services. As co-founder of brand new notebook Tom talked us through how and where he thinks indie business owners should talk dollar dollar bills. Or pounds. Or Euros. Or Yen.

“My top tip for pricing is around when a client should see your price for the first time. Often we put a price in a proposal for the first time, and that's the first time a client will see our price.

But actually I think the better way to do it is to have a broad range on your website, a narrower range in a sales call, then an exact fee in a proposal.

a broad range on your website, a narrower range in a sales call, an exact fee in a proposal.

I think sometimes maybe we're a bit nervous of saying a price out loud in a sales call. I think it's really important to get comfortable with that. And very often we probably use the excuse that what I do is really bespoke and we can't really give a good price.

I've never really seen that to be the case, especially when using ranges. I think we always have at least a broad range that we could use. So, yeah, that's what I'd like to see, make sure the client isn't super shocked when they see your proposal for the first time.”
